Q: What is passivation and why it is important for stainless steel?
A: Passivation refers to creating an outer layer of shield material as a microcoating, which created by chemical reaction with the base material, or allowed to build from spontaneous oxidation in the air and can protect material against corrosion.
The passivation process removes the free Iron from the surface and creates an inert, protective oxide layer which in turn compensates the stainless steel more rust-resistance due to lack of iron to react with the atmosphere. Passivation can result in the very much-desired low corrosion rate of the metal. Passivation also is accomplished by stainless steel electropolishing.
